Acupressure or regular massage?
Massage uses the palms to stroke and knead wide areas so the muscles warm up. Acupressure uses the tip of the thumb or a small wooden stick on one small point, holds it for a few breaths, then releases. In Eastern tradition these points sit along the meridians; pressing the right spot often gives a dull, spreading ache.
At Tong Gia the two go together: the muscles are softened first, then the points are pressed. Pressing a stiff muscle is uncomfortable and less relaxing.
What happens in a session
- Observation: the practitioner looks at your face, shoulders and the curve of your spine, using the Y Tướng Học (face and posture reading) taught by Lương Y Tống Văn Huynh, to see which areas need attention.
- Spine check: fingers run along both sides of the spine to find tight spots.
- Acupressure and muscle release: focused on the areas just found, usually the base of the neck, shoulder blades and lower back.
- Finish: a warm herbal compress and a foot soak.
You are asked about the pressure several times. If anything feels sharp, say so and it is reduced.
