Cupping, Gua Sha and Herbal Steam in Saigon

Cupping, gua sha and herbal steam are available at both Tong Gia branches: 225 Duong Thi Muoi Street, Tan Chanh Hiep Ward, District 12 (open daily 8:00–19:00), and Unit T16-21, The Manhattan, Vinhomes Grand Park, Long Binh Ward, Thu Duc City (open daily 9:00–20:00). Cupping costs 85,000 VND for 30 minutes (about $3), herbal steam is 120,000 VND (about $5), a warm herbal compress is 130,000 VND (about $5), and jade gua sha for the face is 550,000 VND for 60 minutes (about $21).

These are the classic Vietnamese home wellness rituals. Many Vietnamese families grew up with giác hơi (cupping) and cạo gió (scraping with a coin or comb) when someone felt chilled, tired or stiff. At Tong Gia they can be booked on their own or added to a massage.

Cupping in Saigon: what to expect

In giác hơi, cups are placed on the back so the skin is gently drawn up inside them. At Tong Gia this is done as giác hơi bã hàn, cupping aimed at the cold, heavy feeling many people describe after long hours in air-conditioning or rain. The technician usually covers the upper and middle back, along both sides of the spine, and may work on the neck while the cups stay in place.

  • Duration: 30 minutes, 85,000 VND (about $3).
  • After the session: round pink or purple marks often appear where the cups sat. They are normal for cupping and usually fade over several days, so plan around a beach day or backless outfit.
  • Good pairing: cupping after a traditional Vietnamese massage, when the back muscles are already warm and loose.

Gua sha in Ho Chi Minh City: comb and jade

Gua sha, called cạo gió in Vietnamese, means smooth strokes with a tool over the skin. At Tong Gia you will see a jade comb drawn slowly along the head, from the temples toward the back, while the other hand steadies the head.

The listed retail session is jade gua sha for the face, 60 minutes, 550,000 VND (about $21): slow, light strokes with a jade tool over the face, a quiet hour for anyone who holds tension around the jaw, forehead and eyes. If you are interested in gua sha on the back or head as part of a longer session, ask when you book and the team will advise.

Herbal steam and warm herbal compress

Herbal steam (120,000 VND, about $5) surrounds you with warm, herb-scented steam. Many guests like it before a massage to warm up, or on a rainy-season day when they feel chilled.

Warm herbal compress (130,000 VND, about $5) is a heated pouch of herbs pressed and held on tight areas such as the shoulders, lower back or knees. A shorter compress already closes every Tong Gia massage, alongside a foot soak; booking it separately gives it more time.

Skip cupping, gua sha and steam if you have broken or sunburnt skin, a fever or are feeling unwell, and see a licensed physician first if you have a health condition you are unsure about.
